Meet Lance Priest.
He is 21, a college student and part-time used car salesman. He is also a talented liar, a gifted storyteller and a human chameleon with an ironic nickname – Preacher. He may just be the one person CIA legend Geoffrey Seibel has been seeking for decades.
Lance may be THE PERFECT CANDIDATE.
To prove he has what it takes, Lance must pull off impossible covert missions and defeat deadly operatives plotting to sell nuclear warheads to a murderous regime on the eve of Operation Desert Storm.
There is no guarantee Lance will succeed, let alone survive. If Seibel’s training doesn’t kill him, a deadly Saudi assassin and a pair of lethal former KGB agents just might. And then there is Marta Sidorova, a rogue KGB operative who kills almost everyone she meets. Things will get messy.
Life will never be the same for Lance. But in a perilous world where ruthless killers play by no rules, it is good to have a natural born killer like Lance on your side.
From Tulsa, Oklahoma to Dallas to Washington, D.C. to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia to Baghdad, Lance travels a path he never imagined. He joins the Army as his cover, trains with elite espionage operatives and uses his innate skills to learn Russian and Arabic. His journey, always guided by Seibel, takes him far from home and deep into a world few will ever see.
Spies, assassins, terrorists, Delta Forces, and others populate this secret, clandestine and dangerous world where life and death are separated by the razor sharp edge of a blade or the sound of a silenced bullet.
Lance will need to master this world using his unique talents. Preacher's ability to see the environment around him like looking down on a map gives him a unique perspective. A lifetime of running gives him a fitness level above most, as well as a "cranial clock" always keeping time. The almost constant soundtrack playing in his head sometimes gets in the way, but that's just Lance.

Reviews for Metcalf Books
Metcalf has really delivered a great series. I highly recommend all of the "Preacher" books. They are all a little strange, but they are great stories filled with twists and turns that will keep you up late at night turning pages.

I read a lot of books and only feel compelled to write a review on those books that stand out for some reason and this book rose to the top of my list as one of the best books I’ve read in a while.

Finally an author has created a unique character. No he doesnt have the requisite green eyes that are so trite. No he is not suave and yet rugged. His character is unique. As is this author. This is a book to save and to savor.

The lead character in The Perfect Candidate - Lance Priest - is fascinating, compelling and often difficult to like. Priest's training, skills and assignments have revealed his unique combination of assets and liabilities and the story of his development and performance is utterly riveting. The Perfect Candidate is a thrilling read that never allows the reader to catch his breath.

The Perfect Candidate A Lance Priest / Preacher Thriller No 1 eBook Christopher Metcalf
Liked this one from page one.Lance Priest, known as Preacher by some, is a 21 year old college student. He sells used cars to make money.
Lance is a super used car salesman. He never tries to screw buyers over and will sell them the best car for their buck. Lance has his own code of ethics.
Lance is also a liar par excellance. He can tell a lie better than anyone and have everyone believing that lie. He's lied his whole life and the practice has made his life easier. Lance can fit in anywhere and his lies help him get there.
Lance also has a photographic memory and a little out of body thing goin on.
When he's out of body he can float above himself and any alititude, catch a clue about whats going on in the area, and make a decision on how to proceed. Pretty handly little ability to have especially when the CIA takes over his life.
Lance filled out a questionaire he got in college. The questionaire was looking for folks interested in joining the Foreign Service. Lance filled in out, sent it in and promptly forgot about it.
Lance was mildly surprised to be picked for testing. Lance, true to form, put down nothing but lies on the entire questionaire. A questionaire that will change his life.
So begins one damned fine read.
This one has Lance, his time in the Army, his training, his comrades in arms, his boss, his boss's agenda, a girl named Marta, jihadists, the KGB, loads of bad guys and Preacher pulling it off.
Just one great read and well worth those five stars.

The Perfect Candidate A Lance Priest / Preacher Thriller No 1 eBook Christopher Metcalf Reviews
With his debut novel The Perfect Candidate, Christopher Metcalf has given us a non-stop tale of espionage set at the height of the Cold War era. At the heart of the story is an exciting new character (one could hardly label him a protagonist) named Lance Priest, or better known by his alter ego Preacher.
Preacher is a unique individual who possesses a rare set of skills that make him a desired asset for his government’s more shadowy elements. The plot takes us to many of the traditional spy novel locales, but Metcalf also manages to interweave GeoPolitical nuances into the story in a seamless fashion. Not many novels would be able to blend the KGB, CIA and Saddam Hussein into a single cohesive story, but this author does so in a very believable fashion. And not to worry, the action moves at a breathtaking pace and will keep the reader intrigued to the end.
Metcalf’s spycraft reads as genuine, and he manages to make a story told decades earlier seem fresh and relevant in his storytelling. Readers will evoke elements of a Vince Flynn or Lee Child book in this novel, but in The Perfect Candidate I see a new voice in this genre making his case to stand aside the established authors. I’m looking forward to reading the next edition of the trilogy, The Perfect Weapon.
Lance Porter Priest aka The Preacher. Now how does Christopher Metcalf come up with a weirdo name like that. It fairly screams nut job at you once you find out Lance is super aware of his surroundings at all times. And he reads people like an open book too. Yet he is just an ordinary guy. Average grades, average athlete, no outstanding achievements in life except one that Lance does not want to remember. Lance Priest is a a master of social engineering other people to get his own way. The perfect candidate for a spy.
The scenes of Lance's recruitment into the CIA are a hoot to follow. The main CIA character is well developed and described. Lance's response to him and the other spooks in the story keeps the plot moving along and entertaining.
During the training at Harvey Point, the reader finds out Lance is driven to excel. He just never had a big enough challenge before. These scenes are some of my favorites in the book.
Unstoppable as a hero should be, Lance whacks bad guys right and left in artful ways. A true loner and happy with his life that way, he makes for the perfect weapon to unleash on our enemies. All this skill and he is only 21 years old too. A lot of room to develop if he survives. Some of the bad guys are really bad and they all want the Preacher dead.
I read a lot of books and only feel compelled to write a review on those books that stand out for some reason and this book rose to the top of my list as one of the best books I’ve read in a while.
The plot has enough twists and turns to keep you surprised and guessing till the very last page. Despicable secondary characters that manipulate and weave a tapestry of layer upon layer of diabolical schemes and betrayals that leaves you outraged and breathless on behalf of the main character. Nothing is as it seems for the protagonist and you the reader. And the author does this effortlessly.
From the very first page I was hooked and on the edge of my seat. Metcalf has penned a winner in Lance/Preacher as a quirky unique protagonist with some very unusual abilities that grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go. You find yourself eagerly enthralled and pulled along for the ride and desperate for more by the end which is saying a lot for any book. This guy is no cookie cutter spy that populates so many spy thrillers today but someone so unique and different that you can’t help but really care about him and want to see him succeed if only to get some payback from those pulling the strings.
I was so impressed with The Perfect Candidate, the first book in the series, that I bought the next two books immediately after I finished the first and read them back to back. The Perfect Weapon, the second in the series, and The Perfect Angel, the third in the series, are just as well written as the first. The story of Lance/Preacher continues in both books with more surprises and even bigger betrayals as the saga unfolds. And I can honestly say I did not see the final twist that exploded like a bomb off the page at the end of book 3. And as usual, it left me outraged and salivating for more.
I recommend this series to anyone wanting to be swept away by a great epic story.
Message to the author Christopher Metcalf As a new loyal fan and dedicated reader I demand some righteous payback in book 4. When might that be?
