Elizabeth McLagan's In the White Room is a book haunted by memory, by enclosures that root the present to the past.

If you read poetry to escape, this is the book for you. I love McLagan's metaphors and wordsmithing. The imagery bites you like crisp lettuce or sour pickles. They stick with you; "plumage of knives" and "rejected their medium-length shadows". This is poetry to read slowly, as you enjoy the sensations of the imagery in your mind, and like a good story there is a wry twist at the end. Whispering:Product details

In the White Room Elizabeth McLagan 9781625490148 Books Reviews
I have always enjoyed discovering a McLagan poem in publication and have saved several over the years. Here at last is a complete collection, with many of my favorites, such as "My Dark House in a Sky White with Wings" and "All Alien Spirits Rest the Spirit'. When read without a stop, from beginning to end, the rhythm of recurring elements imparts a Phillip Glass like thrum throughout the whole. Each read individually and at random have their own music; oblique and jazzy. This is poetry at its' honest best. There is no cheating here. Here is a real world of thought and intention and of imagery wrought in beautiful lines. This is the work of a poet true to her craft.
In "The White Room" Elizabeth McLagan sets up a variety of tiny imaginary spaces in which things take on the roles of people and enact small temporary dramas. She vastly expands both "white" and "room" through a series of cameo worlds tantalizing, evocative -- leaning towards the ghostly, the dreamlike, but each poem pristine and consistent. Reading these poems you feel as if you are learning something about the truly important, but secret and forgotten, details of a series of past lives. A real gem of a book.
